Binishells in N.S.W. Schools

The Binishell method of construction, as incorporated into the school building programme in N.S.W., has attracted a good deal of attention throughout Australia.

Following an extensive examination of the Binishell principle of erecting concrete dome structures, a joint decision was made by the Department of Public Works and the Department of Education to use the system as part of the programme to provide multi-purpose centres and libraries at a series of selected schools.

The major advantages of the Binishell system are speed of construction and minimized use of labour and materials resources, which make possible economies in capital construction costs.

The concept of the dome, with its uninterrupted floor area, offered considerable advantages in providing educational needs in multi-purpose centres within schools, and libraries in primary schools.

This revolutionary construction method has been used overseas to build houses, and schools, but its use in N.S.W. for educational buildings is on an unprecedented scale anywhere else in the world.

Dr. Dante Bini, holder of the patent rights to the system, subsequently entered into an agreement with the Department of Public Works to supervise the design, construction and fitting out of Binishells and came to Australia to act as consultant to the Department for the programme.

Reaction to the domes at the schools where construction has been completed has been excellent at all levels--educationalists, teachers, pupils and the general community.
